The most common type of shoulder plastic surgery is shoulder replacement, or arthroplasty. This surgery replaces the damaged shoulder joint with an artificial one. The round end of the arm bone (humerus) is replaced with a metal stem with a rounded metal head, and the socket part of the shoulder blade (glenoid fossa) is replaced with a plastic lining held in place by special cement. If only the socket is damaged, a procedure called partial shoulder replacement, or hemiarthroplasty, is used.
This surgery is most often performed for severe shoulder arthritis that can’t be controlled with other treatments. Symptoms of this type of arthritis include a loss of shoulder motion, a grinding feeling in the joint and pain that gets worse with activity.
키성형 수술 During the surgery, your doctor will remove the damaged bone and cartilage and reshape and smooth the area in the socket where the bone should be. A plastic or ceramic ball is attached to the top of the new shoulder bone, and it fits into a metal socket that has been reshaped and smoothed in the shoulder joint. The new parts are held in place with bone cement.
If you’re a candidate for shoulder replacement, your doctor will discuss the surgery with you and answer any questions you have. You’ll be given pain medications and antibiotics before the operation. You’ll stay in the hospital 1 to 3 days after surgery, and your doctor will help you learn how to move your arm again while it heals.
The shoulder replacement operation is usually done under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will insert a needle into your neck before the operation starts to give you a nerve block. This blocks your pain signals from reaching the brain. You will wake up in a recovery room with your arm in a shoulder immobilizer. X-rays will be taken after the operation.
If you have a physically demanding job, your doctor will talk to you about when it is safe for you to return to work. It’s important to follow your physical therapy program, and to practice moving your arm as your doctor tells you to. You should also avoid lifting or pulling anything above waist level for six weeks after your surgery. It can take up to a year for your shoulder to fully recover from the surgery.
