If you’re interested in women’s health, you may be considering a career as an obstetrician-gynecologist. While many people use the terms “obstetrics” and “gynecology” interchangeably, these two medical specialties are distinct. Obstetricians take care of pregnant women, the fetus and the process of childbirth. They deliver babies, treat complications resulting from childbirth and help women recover from the physical and emotional stresses of pregnancy and labor.

Gynecology, on the other hand, focuses on female reproductive health, from the onset of puberty through menopause and beyond. Women see gynecologists for routine Pap tests and pelvic exams, to discuss their birth control options, or to diagnose and treat a wide range of issues with the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and breasts. Gynecologists often perform surgery to treat these problems.

Pregnancy and childbirth are complex, life-changing events. Modern medicine has made the process safe for both mother and baby, and obstetricians play an essential role in its safety. They are responsible for educating expectant mothers and their partners, identifying birth defects in fetuses with ultrasound and amniocentesis, and offering abortion services when necessary.

In addition to performing routine gynecologic exams, obstetricians also administer vaccines, prescribe medication and monitor patients during pregnancy. In addition, they are trained in the medical and surgical management of women with a variety of reproductive disorders, including endometriosis, fibroids, cysts and polyps.하이푸시술

Both obstetricians and gynecologists must have excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with their patients and staff. It’s also important that OB/GYNs stay up to date on the latest research and developments in their fields. AMA Ed Hub offers a broad selection of continuing medical education (CME) courses in obstetrics and gynecology to help you stay current and meet your certification needs.

Choosing to become an OB/GYN takes a deep commitment. You must complete medical school and a residency before you can begin practicing as an OB/GYN in the United States.
