Implants are the gold standard in tooth replacement, and they offer a number of advantages over other options. The biggest benefit of implants is that they look and feel like your natural teeth. During the planning phase, one of the most important decisions that we make is where to place the implant. We have two implant placement methods available: placing the implant over the chest muscle (subglandular placement) or underneath the pectoralis major muscle, a fan-shaped muscle located over or below the rib cage (submuscular placement).
Over the muscle placement offers several benefits for many patients. It is typically less invasive and faster to recover from, as the chest muscle does not need to be manipulated during surgery. It also allows the breast tissue to cover the implant, which can improve the appearance and texture of the implants. However, the pectoralis major muscle is a short muscle, and it cannot fully cover an implant, which can lead to rippling in some cases. This can be a concern for women with minimal natural breast tissue.
Under the muscle placement is usually slower to recover from and can be more traumatic for the chest muscles. It can also increase the risk of a complication known as animation deformity, which refers to the distortion of the implants when the chest muscle is flexed during exercise or daily movements. It is more common for this complication to occur in patients with subglandular placement, but it is still a possibility with submuscular placement.
Both types of implant placement have their pros and cons, and it is important to understand the difference between them so that you can choose the option that will best suit your needs.
